BCHS Dog Fritz Visits Bradford County Manor

Bradford County Manor residents enjoyed a visit from Fritz, a beagle mix dog available for adoption from the Bradford County Humane Society. Megan Snell, Community Outreach Coordinator at BCHS went from room to room at the Manor so all residents could pet Fritz and be in his company.

"I see how the residents brighten up when we walk into nursing homes with our shelter pets. They love to tell their stories of pets they have had through the years," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

Pet visits can be an integral part of socialization for the elderly. Currently BCHS visits The Bradford County Manor, Sayre House, and Ashton Healthcare monthly. They may also begin visiting the Highlands in Laporte.

If your business or school is interested in having BCHS pets visit your organization or to learn more about their shelter, call Jennifer at 888-2114.

Another Long Term BCHS Dog Finds a Home

Last week, the Bradford County Humane Society reported that Patty, a long term resident dog was adopted into a loving family. Patty is doing very well in her new home.

Kenny, a hound mix that had been at BCHS for over a year found his forever home as well last week.

Lisa Stewart from Georgia was up in the Sayre area visiting her parents when she decided to stop into BCHS to take a look at their animals. "As soon as I saw Kenny outside I just knew that it was meant to be. I just lost my Dalmatian due to old age and have always rescued dogs," stated Stewart.

Stewart came in a few times to see Kenny and worked with BCHS Dog Trainer, Mike Norris.

Kenny will have such a good home in Georgia. Stewart plans on taking him to the local dog park daily.

"It warms my heart so much to see these dogs find good homes after being at our shelter for so long. There are many more that need loving, caring people to open their hearts and homes to a shelter pet," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

BCHS has many dogs and cats that are available for adoption. Stop in to see their pets - you just might find your new best friend.

BCHS to Participate in World Spay Day

Each year, The Humane Society of the United States chooses one day to commemorate World Spay Day. This year, Tuesday, February 26th is marked as World Spay Day. World Spay Day is presented by The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International in partnership with animal welfare organizations, veterinary professionals, businesses, and individuals worldwide to shine a spotlight on spay/neuter as a proven means of saving animals’ lives.

The Bradford County Humane Society will be offering a percentage off of the spay and neuter of a pet that is adopted out on Tuesday, February 26th or Saturday, March 2nd. This percentage will vary and is available from the P.A.L. Grant (Prevent a Litter). If the animal is already spayed or neutered the adoption fee will be half off on those two days only.

Spaying or neutering your pet is an important decision for pet owners. As animal lovers who value our pets, it is important to understand the impact of this decision.

Many people believe that their pet's puppies or kittens would never become homeless shelter animals. But the reality is that every time the dog finds his way under the fence to visit the neighbor's female dog, or the indoor/outdoor cat comes back home pregnant again, the result is a litter of dogs or cats. Even if they are placed into homes, it is still possible for them to end up in shelters once they become "hard to handle," or for them to reproduce further and for the next generation of puppies or kittens to wind up homeless.

Many people are surprised to learn that nationwide more than 3 million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats.

The Bradford County Humane Society works closely with Animal Care Sanctuary’s Community Clinic to spay and neuter their adoptive animals.

“It is so important for pets to be spayed or neutered. With all of the homeless dogs, puppies, cats and kittens in animal shelters across the country and world waiting for a home, it is unnecessary to bring into the world litters of kittens or puppies,” states BCHS Executive Director Jennifer L. Spencer. Please consider your next pet to be a shelter cat or dog. There are so many waiting for their forever homes.

Long-Term Resident Dog Finds a Home

Patty, a terrier hound mix, came into the Bradford County Humane Society nearly one year ago. Many other dogs and cats have come into the shelter during that time and had found loving adoptive homes.

Patty had gone out to many community outreach events in the local communities hoping to get her more exposure to find her a home.

Finally, a wonderful family that was perfect for Patty came in to look at her and ultimately adopted her.

We are so thankful that Patty now has a loving family that includes a golden retriever as a playmate.

Many pets come into the shelter as strays and are adopted frequently. Check the BCHS website at www.bradfordchs.petfinder.org for the up to date list of adoptable animals. Or just stop in to the shelter in Ulster on Route 220. You just might find your perfect pet!

BCHS Pets Visit Towanda Senior Center

On Friday, February 1st, staff from the Bradford County Humane Society presented information about their shelter and brought pets to the Towanda Senior Center residents. Part of Bradford County Humane Society's mission is to educate the public on proper care for their pets as well as humane education.

"We really enjoy visiting Senior Centers and local businesses. It gets our pets out for awhile during the day and allows us to answer questions that anyone might have about our animal shelter," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

Fritz, a Beagle mix and a cat named Neeka attended the presentation as well. Both are available for adoption and would make loving pets in any home.

If you are interested in having a presentation from BCHS at your business, please contact Jennifer at 570-888-2114.
