Volunteers Build Bridge for Shelter Dogs

Recently volunteers rebuilt a bridge for the Bradford County Humane Society. Dogs at the shelter are walked by staff and volunteers on a specific dog walk around the shelter, and through a nice path. Over the years, the bridge had deteriorated and was not safe for walking. BCHS's Dog Trainer, Mike Norris, wanted to rebuild the bridge so the dogs had the opportunity for more exercise.

Croft Lumber in Sayre donated lumber and materials for the bridge. The bridge was started a few weeks ago and then finished on a weekend by Vickie Engle, Craig Stiner, Bob Davis, Dale Cole, Mike Norris , Rick Engle, and Chris Yonkin.

The BCHS staff would like to extend a huge thank you to these volunteers and Croft Lumber for their hard work, dedication and compassion for our shelter dogs.

BCHS Partners With Petco

The Bradford County Humane Society as become an "Adoption Partner" with the Petco in Big Flats. Once a month, BCHS volunteers will bring adoptable cats and dogs to the Big Flats Petco as well as informational materials about the shelter.

"We are so happy to work with Petco to give our adoptable animals another outlet to find a home," states Jennifer L. Spencer, Executive Director at BCHS. "It gives more people a chance to learn about our animal shelter and hopefully will find more animals loving homes," she adds.

Petco is committed to raising awareness of their Think Adoption First® philosophy, which encourages people to consider adopting a pet rather than purchasing one. The Think Adoption First philosophy is supported in Petco’s national monthly advertising and in-store events, including Petco’s National Adoption Weekends, which entail prominently promoted adoption events in every store across the country. The Petco Foundation and Petco host several cause and fundraising campaigns in Petco stores and online throughout the year that benefit partner organizations throughout the country.

BCHS will be at Petco again on Saturday, November 24th. Stop in and visit the adoptable pets!

Foamy isn't picky - he wants someone to admire how handsome he is and appreciate his velvety soft fur

15th Annual Shop for Pete November 17

Recently, Bradford County Humane Society representatives brought in "Pete" and "Penny" to the Bradford County Commissioner's meeting to discuss and sign the proclamation of November 4th - November10th being National Animal Shelter Appreciation week.

Jennifer L. Spencer, Executive Director for BCHS, read the proclamation that specified animal shelters acting as safe havens for homeless and abused animals and providing them with comfort and care. Animal shelters help both animals and people in many ways: by returning lost pets to their owners, enforcing animal control laws, rescuing injured animals, and educating the public.

The work of these animal shelters and the importance of their services can go unnoticed and underappreciated by the citizens. Therefore, the Commissioners of Bradford County, designated November 4th - November10th, 2012 National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week in Bradford County, in recognition of the Bradford County Humane Society for providing lifesaving services to animals and people in our community.

The Bradford County Humane Society will hold its 15th Annual “Shop for Pete” fundraiser as part of its recognition of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Each year the shelter’s staff chooses an adoptable pet to represent all homeless animals. BCHS also chose a kitten this year. "There are so many cat lovers out there, that we had to include a kitten to represent the shelter as well," stated Spencer.

This year “Pete” is a hound mix puppy. He will be available for adoption on November 17th. "Penny" is a black kitten that will be available for adoption on November 17th. Tops Markets in Wysox is partnering with The Bradford County Humane Society to hold their annual "Shop for Pete" fundraiser as part of its recognition of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.

Shop for Pete will be held on Saturday, November 17th from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Wysox Tops Market in the Bradford Towne Center shopping plaza. BCHS Representatives will be on hand with Wish Lists of items that the shelter is always in need of. These include: Non-clumping cat litter, kitten food, puppy chow, cat food and dog food (both canned and dry), laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, bleach for cleaning, 40/50 gallon garbage bags, collars and leashes, latex gloves and sponges for cleaning.

"Shop for Pete is a great way for those that maybe can't adopt an animal right now to still be able to help out our shelter and to shop for our homeless and abandoned animals," stated Spencer. "We are so thankful for our community members to help feed and care for our shelter pets," she added.
