Senior Dog is Looking for Her Furever Home

The Bradford County Humane Society recently took in a senior dog that is looking for her forever home. Sally is a 14 year old Collie mix with limited eye sight and no teeth. This doesn't stop her from enjoying her senior years, however. She loves going for walks (at a slow pace), napping, and showing love. She requires a home with no other animals and no children so she can enjoy life with peace and quiet.

She is a staff favorite at BCHS due to her loving, sweet personality.

If you are interested in adopting Sally, please come into the Bradford County Humane Society and fill out an application.

Snowman Wants To Live With You

My name is Snowman, or Mr. Snowman or Mr. Fatman as some people call me. My time at the Bradford County Humane Society has been pretty cool and fun - but now I am ready to experience life with a new family, with my own couch to lie on.

I came into the shelter over a year ago - wow has it really been that long? I guess that old adage is true: time flies when you are having fun. As I was saying, I came to BCHS already being neutered and declawed and boy was I scared. I was so used to having my own home and living in a cage was not for me! I wouldn't let anyone barely touch me for a long time. Then, some of the staff members were alright in my book and I came around - but I needed my own apartment - not a cage. The staff decided they liked me too and set me up in my own office area where they hang out with me, but really, it is my house. Sometimes they would bring in dogs in my house and I did not like that! I just don't care for those noisy, rambunctious dogs. I can tolerate other cats, but I kinda prefer being the king of the castle. Now, I suppose I should tell you that I used to have a weight problem. I came in weighing 28 pounds....I know I know, hefty ( I would rather say big boned). Well, I was put on a diet of sorts and now am down to 18 pounds - what's a little more to love?!

Anyhoo, back to my point of this story - I am ready to find my forever home as they call it. I love to sleep (I won an award for sleeping and lounging once.) I love being petted and love talking to you. I have a lot to say! I don't much like being picked up, but that's just because I am an independent boy who can get places on my own. Oh, and catnip is my best friend! I could roll and roll in it all day long. It's my favorite. I also love my food. If it were my choice I would be that cat in the commercial for Fancy Feast - eating out of a crystal bowl! I am a cheap date when it comes to toys though. Leave a box on the floor and I will have fun for hours. It's my thing.

Sooooooooo, if you are interested in an extremely handsome, talkative, loving cat look me up at the Bradford County Humane Society on Route 220 in Ulster, PA or call them at 570-888-2114. I will be waiting for you!

August Cat Special - $25 Adoption Fee

For the month of August, any cat that is spayed or neutered can be adopted for only $25. "There are so many cats and kittens this time of year at our shelter. Each cat has their own personality and is just waiting for his or her chance to be adopted into their forever home," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

Some of the cats at BCHS have been at the shelter longer than others, but all are deserving of a loving home to call their own.

pic Misha is a pretty spayed female cat with an unusual gold bib. She is a quirky mix of lovey and independent. Sometimes she will climb up on a shoulder for a nice hug and snuggle, other times she will want to be left alone. Misha would be a nice lap cat when she is in the mood. She is quiet and very clean. Misha gets along with other cats and would be good company for a family with no small children..

pic Snowman is a huge adult declawed and neutered male cat. He has very scared when he first arrived, but became much more relaxed and sociable after moving into our back office. He can now be petted and tolerates brushing for short periods of time. He makes a singing noise to complain when he has had enough. Snowman loves to roll around in catnip with his buddy Elmer. He is an independent, couch potato kind of guy who will keep you company without sitting on your lap.

pic Elmer is an adult neutered male cat with lots of personality. He is very affectionate and sociable. Elmer is living in our back office, where he makes the rounds at lunchtime to make sure everyone pets him. He is very playful, likes other cats, and doesn't mind dogs. Elmer especially likes stuffed animals, which he carries around and wrestles with. He can stand up on his rear legs, which makes him look like a chubby guy with a pot belly. Elmer is a sweetheart who will be a great addition to some lucky family.

Stop into the shelter on Route 220 in Ulster and adopt your new best friend! BCHS is a United Way Agency.

Gabriel Needs Your Help

About a month ago a stray Siamese cat named Gabriel found his way into the Bradford County Humane Society's doors. Straggly and unable to walk properly, BCHS staff took him to Milan Vet Clinic to be medically assessed. It was determined that he had been hit by a vehicle of some sort and had two separate breaks in his leg. Surgery involved putting pins in his leg to repair the breaks.

Happy, spirited and very loving, Gabriel came out of surgery and is doing very well. His surgical bill was well over $750 that BCHS paid for . BCHS is asking for the community's assistance to help pay for his surgical bills.

"Every year our shelter spends at least $18,000 on veterinary bills to care for our homeless and abandoned animals. As a nonprofit animal welfare organization we struggle to provide funding. We are lucky to have people in our local communities help us when in need," stated Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

If you can help Gabriel with his expenses, please send a check to BCHS, PO Box 179, Ulster, PA 18850 and note that it is for Gabriel's vet bill. Any donation, big or small will help.

Pet Personals: Benny

Benny is a sweet and playful little lovebug who likes to snuggle. He is calm, quiet, and well behaved. Benny is an easy-going little guy who would be a great addition to any family.

Benny is a like a cat without the attitude. He likes to be carried around and loves to sit on laps. Benny loves cats and is just their size. Benny's favorite song is "Copy Cat" and he loves the movie "Cats and Dogs".

Pet Personals: Rosie

Rosie is a perky and playful adult spayed female Am Staff mix. She's a social party girl whose favorite song is "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".

Rosie has a serious side - in private she likes to read self help books. She is eager to share what she has learned and help you meet your New Year exercise goals by taking you for long walks.

Pet Purrsonals: Stripe

Stripe is an elegant, dignified gentleman cat who enjoys a good conversation. He loves to be held and petted and especially enjoys eating in bed. His favorite movie of all time is "The Quiet Man".

Stripe enjoys bumping foreheads for a kitty mind meld, so don't be surprised if you get a sudden urge to open a can of tuna.

Stop by the BCHS cat room to meet Stripe and try out that mind meld thing. He's looking to bond with someone.

Pet Purrsonals: Topper

Sensitive about your looks? I'm your man! I can't see very well, so I don't care if you are funny looking. I see well enough to climb to high places and don't have any trouble getting around. I am affectionate and would be happy warming your lap on chilly winter evenings.

Stop by BCHS to meet me. I will probably be sleeping on one of the cat trees. I would do best in a home with no other cats.

A Special Dog Needs a Home

Every year over 1,700 animals find their way into the Bradford County Humane Society. Some are strays that come in via the dog warden or individuals; some are abandoned and some are, unfortunately, part of a humane investigation and require extreme veterinary care. Because their histories are almost always unknown, we have to learn about the animals from a new perspective.

One such animal, a Staffordshire Terrier mix named Slim, came to the shelter as a stray in November of 2012. Upon examination before a scheduled neutering, he was diagnosed with a heart murmur. Because of this he is not able to withstand surgery. Slim could have a long life, or it could be cut short because of his diagnosis.

Slim is a sweetheart who loves to go for walks and play in water. He walks OK on a leash, keeps his cage clean, and seems to get along with other dogs. Slim is looking for a nice family and a loving home.

If you feel you can open your heart and home to Slim, please stop in at BCHS on Route 220 in Ulster. His adoption fee will be waived for the right adopter.

Pet Personals: Monkey

Give me a nice cozy bed and some attention and I will be happy. No cats, please. Stop by BCHS and ask for Monkey.

Pet Purrsonals: Sugar and Foamy

Sweet and afectionate, mellow and quiet, all ready to fit into your home. Company and lap warming offered in exchange for cozy spots to nap. Adult cats know how to behave - we won't climb the drapes or torment the dog.

Sugar especially loves windowsills and would like a change of scenery - she's been looking out the shelter windows at the same yard since January.

Foamy isn't picky - he wants someone to admire how handsome he is and appreciate his velvety soft fur
