Dogs Find Their Forever Homes From BCHS

Recently two dogs that have been at the shelter since the end of 2015 found their way into their forever homes.

Socks, a pit mix, had been at the shelter and just hadn't found the perfect home yet. Kyle Wyzga from Sayre came into the shelter on Thursday, September 1st and fell in love with Socks and knew it would be the right fit. (Photo left)

Butch, a Rottie mix, had been at the shelter since December of 2015. Troy Merritt of Stevensville came into the shelter already knowing that he wanted to adopt Butch. And a perfect home it turned out to be! On Friday, September 2nd, Butch went to his forever home. (Photo right)

Congrats to both Socks and Butch for being adopted into loving homes!

BCHS has many loving dogs and cats that are just waiting for their homes too - could you be their new family?

BCHS Long Term Resident Ziggy Finds Her Furever Home

Ziggy, a gorgeous Mastiff mix from the Bradford County Humane Society, had been at the shelter for 3 years waiting to find her perfect home. Although she has been happy at BCHS, a staff favorite, she had longed to go home to her permanent owners and have a place to call her own. Because she didn't get along with many other dogs, and did not like cats, she was harder to place into an adoptive home than some of the other animals at the shelter.

On Saturday, January 17th, Sylvia and Mitchell Wright came to the Bradford County Humane Society to take a look around. They had recently lost a pet named Sorey. They instantly fell in love with Ziggy and it was a match made in Heaven.

"Because BCHS does not euthanize for space, we take care of each animal here until they find the perfect home for them. Ziggy has been a staff favorite for a long time, and we are all so happy that she has found her perfect family!", states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

If you are looking for that perfect 4-legged companion, albeit dog or cat, stop into the Bradford County Humane Society.

BCHS Shelter Puppy Finds Loving Home

Photo: Aubri with Todd

Summer generally is a tough time for animal shelters across the country in terms of being at capacity. The Bradford County Humane Society is no exception. Dogs of all types of breeds, cats, kittens and puppies find their way into the shelter doors.

One such terrier mix puppy the staff named Toad came into BCHS as a stray in June. Toad had no hair and was suffering from a skin condition called Demodex. Demodex is a form of mite that lives in the hair follicles. In most dogs, these mites never cause problems. However, in certain situations, such as an underdeveloped or impaired immune system, intense stress, or malnutrition, the mites can reproduce rapidly, causing symptoms in sensitive dogs that range from mild irritation and hair loss on a small patch of skin to severe and widespread inflammation. Toad’s condition is not contagious to other dogs, nor humans, and he is on medication to help alleviate the issue. His hair is beginning to grow back and he remains a happy, go lucky puppy.

BCHS began asking the community for a foster home for him so he could thrive and get more attention, but Toad ended up finding a forever home. Aubri Mosier from Ulster adopted him and renamed him Todd. She states that he is extremely happy in his new home with her other pets Mitchell, a mixed breed dog also adopted from BCHS, and Nick, a Jack Russell Terrier Beagle mix. Todd’s hair is all growing back and he is a happy, healthy puppy.

If you are thinking of getting a new pet for your home, check your local animal shelters. There are so many dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens that are looking for a special home.

Long Term BCHS Resident Cats Find a Home

Ruby and Harriet, two very beautiful long haired cats from the Bradford County Humane Society, recently found a loving lap to share. Both cats found their way to the shelter as strays. Harriet had been at BCHS for two years and Ruby for over a year. One person came into the shelter and fell in love with both cats and had to adopt both.

"When strays come into the shelter, whether they be cats or dogs, our staff cares for them as if they are their own. There is no time limit with our homeless animals. Most do find homes quickly, however some are deemed less adoptable and find their stay a little longer in our care. It makes us so happy when our longer term pets find loving homes. It gives us hope that there is a perfect fit for each shelter animal," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

There are many cats, kittens and dogs at BCHS looking for their perfect home. Don't shop - adopt from your local Humane Society.

Another Long Term BCHS Dog Finds a Home

Last week, the Bradford County Humane Society reported that Patty, a long term resident dog was adopted into a loving family. Patty is doing very well in her new home.

Kenny, a hound mix that had been at BCHS for over a year found his forever home as well last week.

Lisa Stewart from Georgia was up in the Sayre area visiting her parents when she decided to stop into BCHS to take a look at their animals. "As soon as I saw Kenny outside I just knew that it was meant to be. I just lost my Dalmatian due to old age and have always rescued dogs," stated Stewart.

Stewart came in a few times to see Kenny and worked with BCHS Dog Trainer, Mike Norris.

Kenny will have such a good home in Georgia. Stewart plans on taking him to the local dog park daily.

"It warms my heart so much to see these dogs find good homes after being at our shelter for so long. There are many more that need loving, caring people to open their hearts and homes to a shelter pet," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

BCHS has many dogs and cats that are available for adoption. Stop in to see their pets - you just might find your new best friend.

Long-Term Resident Dog Finds a Home

Patty, a terrier hound mix, came into the Bradford County Humane Society nearly one year ago. Many other dogs and cats have come into the shelter during that time and had found loving adoptive homes.

Patty had gone out to many community outreach events in the local communities hoping to get her more exposure to find her a home.

Finally, a wonderful family that was perfect for Patty came in to look at her and ultimately adopted her.

We are so thankful that Patty now has a loving family that includes a golden retriever as a playmate.

Many pets come into the shelter as strays and are adopted frequently. Check the BCHS website at www.bradfordchs.petfinder.org for the up to date list of adoptable animals. Or just stop in to the shelter in Ulster on Route 220. You just might find your perfect pet!

BCHS Dog Gets Adopted from Dushore Founder's Day

Karen Sysock and Bella
Every year the Bradford County Humane Society either holds or attends over 35 events in Bradford and Sullivan County. Some of these events are school related, but most are community minded.

On August 11th, the Bradford County Humane Society teamed up with supporters from Dushore Market to have a booth outside of their store. Three adoptable dogs were brought as well as many retail items for sell to support the shelter and informational brochures and photos.

One little star, Bella, came and was instantly capturing the hearts of many onlookers. She was part of a humane seizure from a hoarding situation that took place along with 5 other dogs. Bella, a Yorkshire Terrier Chihuahua Mix also called a "Chorkie" was one of these seized dogs.

One of the workers at Dushore Market, Karen Sysock instantly fell in love. "I felt as if I had to adopt her immediately!" That is exactly what Sysock did. Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director brought Bella back to the shelter in Ulster for Sysock to fill out adoption papers and make the connection complete.

"I love to go to these events when we take adoptable animals and they get adopted out the same day or the next week. It makes it all worthwhile and very rewarding," states Spencer.

Happy Ending - Preston

This is Preston, several months after we adopted him. We just love him. He is fitting in well with the other dogs, great temperament, well behaved (for the most part) in the home, now answers to his new name, and we can let him out in the back yard to do his business and he comes right back to the door when he is done. Very happy with our adoption.
