Dog Shot and Killed in Towanda

Sometime between December 8th and December 9th a dog named Charlotte belonging to the Bradford County Humane Society’s Humane Officer was shot and killed at the corner of Schoolhouse Hill Road and Kilmer Hill Road in Towanda. The dog was outside in a fenced in yard along with her other dogs at the time of the shooting.

Officer Hawbaker has been investigating this along with PA State Police since it occurred. A shell casing with what is believed to be fingerprints was found along the edge of the road at the end of Officer Hawbaker’s back yard. The shell casing has been given to the State Police.

Charlotte was a 2 year old black lab mix that was adopted from the Bradford County Humane Society in 2010. She was a lovable, playful dog and leaves behind her sister named Pippy.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Hawbaker at 888-2114, 265-3343, or to contact PA State Trooper Allis at 265-2186.

Bradford County Humane Society and Animal Care Sanctuary Partner to Hold 1st Annual Gala

The Bradford County Humane Society (BCHS) and Animal Care Sanctuary (ACS) have teamed up to hold a gala entitled, “A Night to Paws, Celebrating our Love of Animals” on Saturday, February 9th, 2013 from 6PM – 9 PM at The Club at Shepard Hills in Waverly, NY.

Don’t miss your chance to enjoy a fun evening with other animal lovers! Please show your support by joining us for a lovely evening of food, wine, music, dancing and more. The evening includes a fine dinner as well as a silent auction in an elegant atmosphere. Tickets are $50.00 each and you must pre-register. All proceeds benefit both Animal Care Sanctuary and the Bradford County Humane Society.

“Our community is very supportive of our animal shelters. This event will be a chance for our supporters to enjoy an evening out while supporting our shelter animals at the same time,”states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

"We have received an outpouring of support from local businesses donating items for the silent auction as well as sponorships. We are so pleased to have such dedicated animal lovers in our community," states Spencer.

The event is looking for sponsors. Sponsorship levels begin at $50 and go up to $1,000. Proceeds from the sponsors will assist in spaying and neutering pets, providing vaccinations for shelter animals, treat shelter animals for fleas and ticks, provide food for shelter pets as well as antibiotics and diagnostic testing for shelter animals.

We are also looking for items to be donated for the silent auction. If you have an item you would like to donate, please contact BCHS or ACS.

“It is important for our communities to know that although we are two separate organizations, we work closely together on many projects throughout the year, whether it is an abuse case, promoting spay/neuter services, and yes, even trying to catch pot-bellied pigs that were abandoned on Route 220. “ says Joan Smith-Reese, Executive Director of Animal Care Sanctuary.

The goal of the gala is to raise at least $8,000 to help with the costs of caring for shelter animals at both ACS and BCHS as well as for the community members to have a lovely time. To purchase tickets, go to www.animalcaresantuary.org or purchase in person at BCHS in Ulster, or at ACS in East Smithfield.

Please contact BCHS at 570-888-2114 or ACS at 570-596-2200 for more information, to find our adoptable pets, to donate, and to find out about upcoming events. We are non-profit organizations, and we rely on donations from generous individuals to help us care for animals in need in and Bradford County.

Local Boy Holds Birthday Fundraiser for BCHS

Dawson Brown, a student at Northeast Bradford School, is truly selfless. For his recent birthday on November 8th, he decided he would have a birthday party. However, instead of receiving gifts from his friends, he wanted the partygoers to donate to the Bradford County Humane Society. 75 people attended his birthday party held on November 10th. Donated items included dog food, cat food, cat litter, bleach, dog toys, stuffed animals and other supplies.

BCHS relies on the community for 80% of its funding throughout the year. If it weren't for people like Dawson, the animal shelter would have a difficult time surviving.

A huge thank you goes out to Dawson Brown for helping the shelter animals!

BCHS encourages anyone to hold a fundraiser for the shelter. Birthday parties, church outings, family fundraisers, and business fundraisers are only some of the many ways that you can help your local Humane Society. For information on volunteering or fundraising, contact Jennifer Spencer, BCHS Executive Director at 888-2114.

BCHS Investigates Humane case

A little over two months ago, the Bradford County Humane Officer was called to a home that involved a dog severely in need of care. The police were also involved in the case for multiple charges. A presumed spaniel mix dog was in the home and was severely emaciated, dehydrated, had lost all of its hair and was in dire need of veterinary assistance. Officer Hawbaker immediately took the dog to Towanda Creek Animal Hospital where it was determined that the female dog, named Molly, would need an IV for fluids, skin scrapings, flea medications, X-rays, antibiotics and even steroids; that is if the dog would survive the night.

Molly has been a sweetheart and a trooper. With time and care from the dedicated staff at Towanda Creek Animal Hospital, Molly is expected to make a full recovery, in fact she is already growing her hair back. She is currently being fostered by a staff member from the animal hospital.

Because of Molly's extensive vet care, her vet bill is over $5,000. If you would like to help with this cost, please send a check to BCHS, PO Box 179, Ulster, PA 18850 and mark on the check "Molly." Or you can donate via paypal at www.bradfordchs.petfinder.org. BCHS receives over 400 animal cruelty calls each year for Bradford and Sullivan Counties. Each call is investigated and if deemed a true cruelty case, charges may be brought upon the individual or individuals involved. Last year alone, BCHS went to court against 9 cruelty cases and won each case.

BCHS is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to alleviate and prevent pain and suffering among animals and to promote the humane treatment of all living things. BCHS is a United Way Agency.
