Photo: Ziggy, waiting for her forever home for 2.5 years, invites you to join her and her furry friends for the Christmas party!

The elves at BCHS are making their plans and checking them twice because on Saturday, December 12th, from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. we are inviting our pet-loving public and their four-footed companions to stop by and say "Merry Christmas."

While here be sure to visit all of our pets available for adoption. You can munch on light refreshments and share pet-lover stories with the staff and board. Raffles, free door prizes, pet photography from Ruback's Photography and more! All this and furry friends too at the Bradford County Humane Society shelter on route 220, north of Ulster. We look forward to meeting you. Happy Holidays!

BCHS Needs Your Help for Injured Dog

Recently, an older black and white female Shih Tzu found its way to the Bradford County Humane Society. She was brought in as a stray from the dog warden in very bad shape. She was dirty, had fleas and flea dermatitis and what was worse is she had an obvious broken leg.

The staff named her Sophie and she was transported immediately to Milan Vet Clinic. Dr. Washington performed x-rays and it was determined that her leg was broken in two places and would require surgery to correct. She also is completely blind in one eye and had an ulcer on the other eye making vision extremely impaired. It was estimated that she was 10-13 years old. Even though she had these complications, she is the happiest girl.

Surgery was performed at Milan Vet Clinic and she is walking around and even running now, with resting in between. She is currently being fostered until she is completely recovered. She will require one more surgery to take the pin out of her leg that is correcting the broken bone.

BCHS is asking the community to assist with her large vet bill, upwards of $900. BCHS is a nonprofit private organization that relies 80% of its funding from donations.

If you would like to assist Sophie with her bill, please send a check to

Birthday Party Gives Gifts to BCHS

Shaylee Greenland, a fourth grade student from Towanda, held her 10th birthday party recently. Instead of gifts for herself, she wanted to have her attendees bring gifts for the Bradford County Humane Society. On October 31st, close to 25 people attended her birthday party and brought many items such as dog food, cat food, cat litter, bog biscuits and bleach for BCHS.

"We are so appreciative for Shaylee to have held this party for our shelter animals. She and her friends and family did a great job!", stated Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

The shelter pets are always in need of the items that Shaylee and her guests brought. If you would like to have a fundraiser for BCHS and would like more information, contact Jennifer at 570-888-2114.
