A Special Dog Needs a Home
One such animal, a Staffordshire Terrier mix named Slim, came to the shelter as a stray in November of 2012. Upon examination before a scheduled neutering, he was diagnosed with a heart murmur. Because of this he is not able to withstand surgery. Slim could have a long life, or it could be cut short because of his diagnosis.
Slim is a sweetheart who loves to go for walks and play in water. He walks OK on a leash, keeps his cage clean, and seems to get along with other dogs. Slim is looking for a nice family and a loving home.
If you feel you can open your heart and home to Slim, please stop in at BCHS on Route 220 in Ulster. His adoption fee will be waived for the right adopter.

BCHS and Animal Care Sanctuary Partner to Hold 1st Annual Gala
The Bradford County Humane Society (BCHS) and Animal Care Sanctuary (ACS) have teamed up to hold a gala entitled, “A Night to Paws, Celebrating our Love of Animals” on Saturday, February 9th, 2013 from 6PM – 9 PM at The Club at Shepard Hills in Waverly, NY.
Don’t miss your chance to enjoy a fun evening with other animal lovers! Please show your support by joining us for a lovely evening of food, wine, music, dancing and more. The evening includes a fine dinner as well as a silent auction in an elegant atmosphere. Tickets are $50.00 each and you must pre-register. All proceeds benefit both Animal Care Sanctuary and the Bradford County Humane Society.
“Our community is very supportive of our animal shelters. This event will be a chance for our supporters to enjoy an evening out while supporting our shelter animals at the same time,”states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.
The event is looking for sponsors. Sponsorship levels begin at $50 and go up to $1,000. Proceeds from the sponsors will assist in spaying and neutering pets, providing vaccinations for shelter animals, treat shelter animals for fleas and ticks, provide food for shelter pets as well as antibiotics and diagnostic testing for shelter animals.
We are also looking for items to be donated for the silent auction. If you have an item you would like to donate, please contact BCHS or ACS.
“It is important for our communities to know that although we are two separate organizations, we work closely together on many projects throughout the year, whether it is an abuse case, promoting spay/neuter services, and yes, even trying to catch pot-bellied pigs that were abandoned on Route 220. “ says Joan Smith-Reese, Executive Director of Animal Care Sanctuary.
The goal of the gala is to raise at least $8,000 to help with the costs of caring for shelter animals at both ACS and BCHS as well as for the community members to have a lovely time. To purchase tickets, go to www.animalcaresantuary.org or purchase in person at BCHS in Ulster, or at ACS in East Smithfield.
Please contact BCHS at 570-888-2114 or ACS at 570-596-2200 for more information, to find our adoptable pets, to donate, and to find out about upcoming events. We are non-profit organizations, and we rely on donations from generous individuals to help us care for animals in need in and Bradford County.

Volunteers Build Bridge for Shelter Dogs
(Photo from left to right: Vickie Engle, Craig Stiner, Bob Davis, Dale Cole, Mike Norris , Rick Engle, Chris Yonkin)
Recently volunteers rebuilt a bridge for the Bradford County Humane Society. Dogs at the shelter are walked by staff and volunteers on a specific dog walk around the shelter, and through a nice path. Over the years, the bridge had deteriorated and was not safe for walking. BCHS's Dog Trainer, Mike Norris, wanted to rebuild the bridge so the dogs had the opportunity for more exercise.
Croft Lumber in Sayre donated lumber and materials for the bridge. The bridge was started a few weeks ago and then finished on a weekend by Vickie Engle, Craig Stiner, Bob Davis, Dale Cole, Mike Norris , Rick Engle, and Chris Yonkin.
The BCHS staff would like to extend a huge thank you to these volunteers and Croft Lumber for their hard work, dedication and compassion for our shelter dogs.

BCHS Partners With Petco
"We are so happy to work with Petco to give our adoptable animals another outlet to find a home," states Jennifer L. Spencer, Executive Director at BCHS. "It gives more people a chance to learn about our animal shelter and hopefully will find more animals loving homes," she adds.
Petco is committed to raising awareness of their Think Adoption First® philosophy, which encourages people to consider adopting a pet rather than purchasing one. The Think Adoption First philosophy is supported in Petco’s national monthly advertising and in-store events, including Petco’s National Adoption Weekends, which entail prominently promoted adoption events in every store across the country. The Petco Foundation and Petco host several cause and fundraising campaigns in Petco stores and online throughout the year that benefit partner organizations throughout the country.
BCHS will be at Petco again on Saturday, November 24th. Stop in and visit the adoptable pets!

15th Annual Shop for Pete November 17
Jennifer L. Spencer, Executive Director for BCHS, read the proclamation that specified animal shelters acting as safe havens for homeless and abused animals and providing them with comfort and care. Animal shelters help both animals and people in many ways: by returning lost pets to their owners, enforcing animal control laws, rescuing injured animals, and educating the public.
The work of these animal shelters and the importance of their services can go unnoticed and underappreciated by the citizens. Therefore, the Commissioners of Bradford County, designated November 4th - November10th, 2012 National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week in Bradford County, in recognition of the Bradford County Humane Society for providing lifesaving services to animals and people in our community.
The Bradford County Humane Society will hold its 15th Annual “Shop for Pete” fundraiser as part of its recognition of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Each year the shelter’s staff chooses an adoptable pet to represent all homeless animals. BCHS also chose a kitten this year. "There are so many cat lovers out there, that we had to include a kitten to represent the shelter as well," stated Spencer.
This year “Pete” is a hound mix puppy. He will be available for adoption on November 17th. "Penny" is a black kitten that will be available for adoption on November 17th. Tops Markets in Wysox is partnering with The Bradford County Humane Society to hold their annual "Shop for Pete" fundraiser as part of its recognition of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
Shop for Pete will be held on Saturday, November 17th from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Wysox Tops Market in the Bradford Towne Center shopping plaza. BCHS Representatives will be on hand with Wish Lists of items that the shelter is always in need of. These include: Non-clumping cat litter, kitten food, puppy chow, cat food and dog food (both canned and dry), laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, bleach for cleaning, 40/50 gallon garbage bags, collars and leashes, latex gloves and sponges for cleaning.
"Shop for Pete is a great way for those that maybe can't adopt an animal right now to still be able to help out our shelter and to shop for our homeless and abandoned animals," stated Spencer. "We are so thankful for our community members to help feed and care for our shelter pets," she added.

BCHS Receives $1,000 Operations Grant
Bradford County Humane Society, Ulster, Receives $1,000 Operations Grant The PEDIGREE Foundation gives award in partnership with the Petfinder Foundation.
Bradford County Humane Society, Ulster, has received a $1,000 Operation Grant from the PEDIGREE Foundation in partnership with Petfinder Foundation. Bradford County Humane Society is one of 150 shelters and rescue groups nationwide to receive a grant.
PEDIGREE Foundation Operation Grants are intended to assist in funding basic operation costs, such as facility/structure, medical, transportation, spay/neuter and other basic needs to help make dogs more adoptable.
"We believe that all dogs deserve to be loved and cared for," said Debra Fair, PEDIGREE Foundation president. "Our partnership with Petfinder Foundation, allows us to make the greatest difference in the animal shelter community through these operational grants."
Toni Morgan, Petfinder Foundation program director, said that Operational Grants are often the most difficult for shelters to secure. "Grants like these from PEDIGREE Foundation for basic needs are particularly helpful right now when animal welfare groups are facing tough economic realities like the rest of us."
To be eligible for the grants, animal welfare organizations must be members of Petfinder.com, the largest database of homeless pets on the web. Bradford County Humane Society posts its pets at www.petfinder.com/shelters/PA19.html.

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
Are you looking for…
- An exercise buddy?
- A best friend for you or your children?
- A constant companion for your mother or father?
- A fuzzy face to greet you after a hard day’s work?
- A best friend to love you unconditionally every day?
The Bradford County Humane Society is hoping that you can open your heart and home to a shelter dog and adopt. October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
Every day dogs of various breeds come in as strays to the Bradford County Humane Society. If their owner does not come to claim them within 48 hours, these dogs are available for adoption. Each dog has their own background, and story, but they all need loving, caring homes.
While a lot of people are looking for puppies or small breed dogs, many other dogs tend to get overlooked. Senior dogs or dogs that may need special care are looking for their final forever homes. Pit bull breeds get a bad reputation. BCHS has many pure bred pit bulls or mixed breed pit bulls. Bully breeds can be especially heartwarming and the best companion a human can have.
Two bully breeds that are need homes are:
Chaos is a handsome young adult male Am Staff whose dad is Cujo/Uncle Joe. He is a big huggable sweetie pie. Chaos is excellent on a leash and appears to be house trained.
Lindy is an adult female Am Staff. She is very friendly with people and is fine with other dogs. Our trainer is working with her to channel her energy. Lindy has recently been spayed.
Even if you can’t adopt a dog right now, there are many things you can do to help homeless pets at BCHS. You can become a volunteer. Come to the shelter, fill out a volunteer application, and attend the next volunteer orientation. Then you can walk dogs, socialize with cats, help clean, and many other things.
Check out all of our other available pets here.
For questions, call 570-888-2114.
