Wyalusing Elementary School Donates to BCHS

For the last two years, the Wyalusing Elementary School has held a fundraiser to support local charities. Relay for Life and the Bradford County Humane Society are the recipients. This year for two weeks, students, teachers and parents raised funds and over $2,800 was raised for each organization.

"This type of support is just amazing. Our shelter animals really benefit from this type of funding to help care and feed them," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

BCHS to Hold Shop for Benny & Betty at Kmart

Kmart in Wysox is partnering with The Bradford County Humane Society to hold "Shop for Benny & Betty", a take on the annual Shop for Pete fundraiser.

Shop for Benny & Betty will be held on Saturday, April 13th from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Wysox Kmart in the Bradford Towne Center shopping plaza. BCHS Representatives will be on hand with Wish Lists of items that the shelter is always in need of. These include: Non-clumping cat litter, kitten food, puppy chow, cat food and dog food (both canned and dry), laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, bleach for cleaning, 40/50 gallon garbage bags, collars and leashes, latex gloves and sponges for cleaning. Adoptable animals will also be present for you to meet.

Benny is a handsome neutered male cat that came to the shelter as a stray a couple of months ago. He has an old injury in his front leg, but that doesn’t slow him down. He is a big lovebug who likes to snuggle. He gets along with cats and would be a sociable addition to any home.





Betty is a sweet, playful, high energy dog. She would love a home where she would get lots of exercise. She is microchipped and spayed.




"Shop for Benny & Betty is a great way for those that maybe can't adopt an animal right now to still be able to help out our shelter and to shop for our homeless and abandoned animals, stated Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

Tanner’s Bar and Grill Holds Fundraiser for BCHS

For the past three years Ryan Wood and John Thurston, co-owners of Tanner’s Bar and Grill in Athens have held fundraisers to support the Bradford County Humane Society.

This year, $415 in monetary donations was collected during Christmastime and through the month of February. T-shirts were also sold with 100% of the proceeds being donated to BCHS.

“Both of us feel very strongly about helping out animal shelters, we enjoy holding fundraisers to help the animals,” stated Wood.

This winter has been especially difficult for BCHS, with overcrowding a concern. “We have had an overabundance of stray dogs this year. When we get so full, we contact local shelters and rescues to help with the overflow,” states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

“We are so thankful to businesses like Tanner’s for keeping us in mind when holding fundraisers. The money raised will assist in feeding and caring for the homeless animals at the shelter. We rely on our local communities for 80% of our yearly funding,” added Spencer.

“The success of this fundraiser wouldn’t have been possible without our customers and supporters,” stated Wood.

Each month Tanner’s will be selling a different designed T-shirt, with 100% of the proceeds going to a different local charity. T-shirts sell for $15 each with a daily T-shirt giveaway.

A special thank you goes to Pastrick’s Sporting Goods in Elmira Heights, NY for printing the T-shirts.

Detrick, the Shar-pei Mix in the photo, is a very nice young male dog. He walks well on a leash and would be a great addition to any home.

Student Chooses BCHS for Senior Project

Prior to graduation most high school seniors in our area must complete a senior project based on a topic that interests them. Teddie Garcia, a high school senior from the Sullivan County High School chose the Bradford County Humane Society because of his love of animals. "I really wanted to help out at the Bradford County Humane Society because I plan one day to become a veterinarian," stated Garcia.

By walking dogs, socializing with cats and even working at various BCHS fundraisers throughout the year, Garcia was able to complete his community service hours all while supporting the shelter.

"We are so thankful for students who choose our shelter for their senior projects. Not only does it benefit our shelter animals, but we get to see the students really thrive on knowing that what they are doing is for a great cause, " says Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

The last part of the senior project is presenting to various teachers and to the mentor at the humane society.
