Dille Parish UCC Donates to BCHS

Recently the Dille Parish UCC in Leraysville held a fundraiser for the Bradford County Humane Society. Each year they choose a local nonprofit that is in need to raise funds for. They donated over $60.00 as well as much needed cat litter, pet food, supplies, bleach, laundry detergent and other items.

This time of year is especially difficult on local animal shelters. BCHS in particular has been at full capacity and is in need of cat litter and kitten food at the moment.

"If you are looking for a pet, we urge you to come to our shelter and open your heart to one of our homeless animals," states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director. BCHS operates on grants and donations. All donations are appreciated. BCHS is a member agency of the United Way of Bradford County.

Chrizma Salon Holds Unique Fundraiser for Local Animal Shelter

There were many pies thrown during the Chrizma Salon fundraiser for The Bradford County Humane Society. Local students, family members, neighbors and friends gathered at the salon located on Thomas Street in Towanda for an old-fashioned pie-in-the-face party. Anyone wishing to throw a pie paid $5 which was then donated to BCHS. What started out quite formal with certain people knowing they would be participating, became a free for all with everyone having fun and throwing pies and helping the animal shelter all at the same time.

With the sale of pies in the face, BCHS t-shirts, raffles and a silent auction, a whopping $617.28 was raised.

Chrizma Salon owner Christine Griffith and daughter Cassidy Estelle came up with the idea. They have been avid supporters and volunteers at BCHS since June of 2011. “We wanted to do something different and unique to raise awareness for the animals at the Humane Society,” said Griffith.

Many local businesses helped support too. Topps Markets in Wysox donated cookies and cakes and Standing Stone Transport in Towanda donated whipped cream for the pies. Many individuals assisted with cat and dog food donations for the shelter as well. A silent auction full of hair products, Mary Kay cosmetics, and Chrizma Salon gift certificates was held. Wyalusing Senior Savanna Cobb was also in attendance as she is working with BCHS for her Senior Project.

“I have been to many fundraisers for our shelter, and this was definitely at the top of the charts as far as people have so much fun! I was so impressed with how many local community members and family friends of the salon that was there to support us,” stated Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director. Spencer was on hand with various t-shirts for sale, educational materials, brochures and newsletters as well as her adopted Chihuahua, Grace.

Because of the success of this fundraiser, Griffith says they will continue to hold an annual event in support of the homeless and abandoned animals of BCHS.

The Bradford County Humane Society is a nonprofit animal welfare organization whose mission is to alleviate/prevent pain and suffering among animals and to promote the humane treatment of all living things.

Adoption Fees Reduced for Spayed and and Neutered Cats

For the month of July only, all spayed and neutered cats at the Bradford County Humane Society are only $25.00 to adopt. The usual cost for a cat that has been altered is $50.00.

 "We have so many wonderful cats at the shelter that have already been spayed or neutered and are just waiting to be adopted into a loving home. I hope that by lowering the fee for July we can find them the right family", states Jennifer L. Spencer, BCHS Executive Director.

A lot of the cats at the shelter are completely up to date on their shots, some are declawed and all are looking for a loving home.

Long Term Resident Cats at BCHS Need Loving Homes

Kitten season is in full swing across our area and BCHS has had many kittens come into the shelter and go out just as quickly when they are adopted.

Some adult cats seem to have a hard time finding a loving home. Because June is Adopt a Cat Month, BCHS would like to highlight some cats that have been at the shelter for a longer time than most. Each of these cats has their own distinct personalities and deserve a caring home as much as any other cat or kitten.

Harriet is a pretty adult female cat who came to us as a stray from Wysox. Harriet is a nice, quiet cat who likes to be petted but not held. She would prefer a home with no other cats and is not fond of children. Harriet is now spayed, tested negative for feline leukemia, and had her rabies shot. Harriet would be an excellent pet for someone who works long hours - she likes to be company when she is in the mood, but she would also no mind being left alone for long periods of time. Harriet has been living in our free roam cat room since June and now tolerates other cats as long as they don't go out of their way to bug her. She is a very clean cat. Harriet has been at the shelter since March 2011.

BJ is a pretty adult female cat who came to us as a stray from Athens. She is friendly and likes to give nice hugs and rub her face against your neck. BJ is now spayed, had her Rabies shot and tested negative for feline leukemia.: BJ is a nice, quiet, mellow cat. She is friendly without being intrusive - she won't be on your desk trying to bump your hand as you write like some cats, but she will be a nice companion. BJ has been at the shelter since April 2011.

Autumn is a pretty young adult spayed female cat. She and her siblings arrived as babies in October 2011 and all have been adopted except her. Autumn is affectionate and cuddly. She is very playful and will probably be a good mouser. Autumn is easy going and gets along with other cats. She has tested negative for feline leukemia and had her rabies shot. Autumn would make an excellent addition to any family.

Timmi is a cute male cat that came to the shelter as a stray from Sayre. He is young, and very playful. Timmi has been neutered and tested negative for feline leukemia.. Timmi has grown into a nice young adult cat. He is playful and always ready for action. Timmi likes attention when he is in the mood and stops long enough to enjoy it. He gets along great with other cats. Timmi has tested negative for feline leukemia and is up to date on shots. Timmi has been at the shelter since October 2011.

Athena is a pretty and petite adult spayed female cat. She is affectionate, quiet, and mellow. Athena loves to sit on a lap for a nice snuggle. She is playful and gets along with other cats. Athena has tested negative for feline leukemia and had her rabies shot. She is ready and waiting for a new home. Athena has been spayed and tested negative for feline leukemia. Athena has been at the shelter since November 2011.

Tori is an adult female tiger cat who came to us as a stray from Sayre. She is a sweetheart who loves people but so far does not seem fond of cats. She is very playful. She does not like to pose for pictures! Tori has been spayed and tested negative for feline leukemia. Tori has been at the shelter since November 2011.

Hot Weather Means Proper Shelter Needed for Dogs

Summer season is upon us and the hot weather is soon to hit our region. Dogs that are outside need to have proper shelter to protect them from the heat, rain, and inclement weather.

Recently Bradford County Humane Society's Humane Officer Hawbaker traveled to Towanda to visit very well built dog houses and kennels. In the photo you can see the proper dog houses, and kennel area that is sufficient for the size of the dogs.

You can purchase dog houses at various home improvement stores or pet supply stores, or you can even build your own using wood. BCHS has handouts of how to do this.

The Humane Officer would like to remind you of the following:

The law of Pennsylvania Requires That You:

1. Supply FRESH food, water and necessary Veterinary care for all animals in your care or on your property.

2. Supply ALL animals’ access to clean shelter sufficient to keep it dry, protect it from bad weather and be adequate to preserve its own body heat and shade to protect from the hot sun.

Not following the laws above could mean:
1. Penalties
2. Fines
3. Forfeiture
4. And or JAIL time

Questions The Humane Police Officer Has Received In Regards To The Above Law:

1. Do livestock such as horses, cows, donkeys, sheep, goats and pigs need shelter?
Reply: YES, they must at least have a three sided shelter that is clean and stays dry. A TREE LINE IS NOT CONSIDERED ADEQUATE SHELTER.

2. If a dog can get under a porch or under a vehicle is that considered to be adequate?
Reply: NO, They must have a coop or nice dog house that stays dry and is not in the mud. BEDDING MUST BE STRAW OR WOOD SHAVINGS ONLY, NO RAGS OR BLANKETS.

Joan E. Mullaly Memorial Raffle Quilt Benefits BCHS

Marletta Pousen of Monroeton was the lucky winner of the quilt raffle. Winnie Moyer, receptionist at East Smithfield Holistic Healthcare enthusiastically sold the majority of tickets. Many were also sold at Athens Arts Fest and Fay’s Sugar Shack Lion’s Pancake Days. The quilt was made by Dottie McPherson of Boston and kindly donated for the raffle.

We honor and remember Joan Mullaly for her many years of tireless volunteer service at the shelter and her position as treasurer. We miss her and her caring and concern.
